Elsah, Ill., September 6, 2011 — Senior forward Dylan Roman scored his second goal of the season, this time a game-winner in overtime, to break a 0-0 tie and lead the No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win at Principia College on Tuesday night in Elsah, Ill.

Sophomore Michael Flowers found Roman for the game-winning strike as the first overtime period was coming to a close to notch his second assist of the year. Roman is now tied with senior Cody Costakis for the team lead in scoring with two goals this year.

For Roman, it was his third-career goal and his third-career game-winner. Washington University has now won all three games this season by a one-goal margin, but Tuesday night’s victory over Principia was the first to reach extra time.

It was also the Bears’ first shutout of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson turned away two Principia shots to pick up the second shutout of his career, while lowering his 2011 goals against average to 0.65.

Washington University controlled play against Principia (0-3), outshooting the Panthers 18-8 while firing 13 shots on net compared to just two for the opposition. The Bears also attempted nine corner kicks, limiting Principia to just one corner opportunity. Washington University now leads the all-time series with Principia 35-6-1.

Washington U. (3-0) continues its two-game road stint on Saturday, Sept. 10, when it will face Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., at 1 p.m.
