St. Louis, Mo., September 3, 2011 — The No. 19 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team rallied from a one-goal deficit to post a 2-1 victory over Central College (Iowa) on Saturday night at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.
Senior Dylan Roman scored the game-winning goal with 18 minutes remaining in the contest, as Washington U. picked up its second-consecutive one-goal victory. Junior Brian Wright assisted on the game-winner, as he sent a pass into the box that was flicked by Roman past Central goalkeeper Tim Maggard.
Washington U. outshot Central, 21-10, for the game and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Jonathan Jebson made two saves in the nets as he picked up his second win of the year.
Central (1-1) took the early lead in the 12th minute, taking advantage of a lapse in the Bear defense. Central’s Brandon Bautista sent a through ball into the box to Jonathan Schroeder, who was left all alone and one-timed a shot past Jebson.
The Dutch held onto the 1-0 lead until the 36th minute, when senior Cody Costakis drilled a left-footed shot from 25 yards out to the far corner past Maggard to tie the score at 1-1.
Sophomore Michael Flowers did the dirty work on the play for Washington U., as he beat two defenders down the sideline before sending a ball into the midfield that deflected off two defenders before landing on the foot of Costakis.
Washington University (2-0) will play its second road game of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Principia College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m., in Elsah, Ill.
