No. 6 Men's Soccer Blanks Birmingham Southern to Improve to 5-0

St. Louis, Mo., September 16, 2011 — Junior Zach Query scored a goal in each half to lead the No. 6 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Birmingham Southern College on Friday night at Francis Field.
The Bears dominated the first 20 minutes of play, outshooting Birmingham Southern 7-0. Washington U. struck first at the 12:36 mark of the first half, following a nice give and go between senior Cody Costakis and Query. Costakis set the play up the play for Query, who beat Birmingham Southern goalkeeper Sveinbo Grimsson with a shot to the near corner.
Senior Dylan Roman came off the bench in the 22nd minute and quickly made an impact for the Bears. Roman scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season at 32:38, following a service from freshman Jon Geremia. Roman was left unmarked in the box, and had time to settle the ball before ripping a shot into the back of the net.
Query put the game out of reach with a goal at 51:45 on a cross from senior Patrick McClean, and then McClean added an insurance goal at 64:07. Freshman Pay Estakhri rounded out the scoring for the Bears with an unassisted goal at 85:18.
Sophomore goalkeepers Jonathan Jebson (82 minutes, 30 seconds) and Michael McCarthy (seven minutes, 30 seconds) recorded the shutout in goal without making a save as the Bears posted their third-straight shutout.
Washington U. outshot Birmingham Southern 17-4 for the game and had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Washington University (5-0) returns to action at home on Saturday, Sept. 17, against Greenville College. Game time is set for 8:30 p.m. at Francis Field.
