No. 18 Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Tie with Illinois Wesleyan

Bloomington, Ill., September 15, 2010 – The No. 18 Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team played Illinois Wesleyan University to a 1-1 tie on Wednesday evening at Neis Soccer Field in Bloomington, Ill.
The Bears trailed heading into the half for the first time this season after Illinois Wesleyan’s Erick Butt scored his first goal of the year in the 41st minute of the opening period. It was the first goal allowed by WUSTL starter Andrew Serio, who also made a save in 45 minutes of action.
Washington University appeared to be headed toward defeat despite controlling the offensive flow of the game, but junior Cody Costakis scored his first goal of the season in the 89th minute to knot the score at 1-1 and force overtime, where the team teams remained tied after 20 additional minutes of action.
Junior John Duncan sent a cross from the end line into the middle of the box to find Costakis for the crucial late score; it was Duncan’s second assist of the season.
Washington University had chances to score in each of the overtime periods but was unable to pull ahead. Freshman Jeremy Kirkwood hit the post with a shot in the first overtime, while junior Patrick McLean and sophomore Brian Wright each fired a shot in net in the final minute of action, but IWU goaltender Frank Gorg turned away both scoring attempts.
Freshman Jonathan Jebson played in goal for the final 65 minutes of the game for the Red and Green, making two saves to keep his team in the game. Washington University finished with an 18-9 advantage in shots, and fired a total of nine shots of net, compared to just four for the Titans.; the Bears also attempted 10 corner kicks, while Illinois Wesleyan had only two.
Washington University (4-0-2) returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 19, when it hosts Loras College on Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
