No. 7 Men's Soccer Shuts Out Rhodes 3-0 to Improve to 4-0 on the Year
Memphis, Tenn., September 10, 2011 — The No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team earned its third road win of the season and picked up its second-straight shutout with a 3-0 victory at Rhodes College on Saturday afternoon in Memphis, Tenn.
The Bears scored twice in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead into the half and tacked on one more goal 35 minutes into the second period.
Senior Patrick McLean scored his second goal of the season, taking a pass from junior Jeremy Kirkwood in the 16th minute to provide the Bears with the early advantage. Both of McLean’s scores so far this season have proven to be game winners.
Senior Dylan Roman also scored in the first half, with senior Kevin Privalle picking up an assist on the score in the 36th minute. For Roman it was his team-leading third goal of the year, and the first of his career that did not prove to be the decisive strike.
Sophomore Jack Fischer was the third Bear to score in the victory, finishing a pass from senior Cody Costakis on a corner kick with just over 10 minutes to play. The goal was the first of Fischer’s career and Costakis’ assist was his first of the season and 10th of his career.
Washington University outshot Rhodes 14-3 and fired seven shots on goal while keeping the Lynx from testing sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson even once.
Washington U. (4-0) returns home next Friday, Sept. 16, when it will host Birmingham Southern College at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo., at 7 p.m.
