BOX SCORE

St. Louis, Mo., September 1, 2011 – The No. 19 Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team opened its 2011 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Webster University on Thursday night at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in St. Louis, Mo.

Washington University scored twice within the first 30 minutes of the game to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Senior captain Cody Costakis recorded the first goal of the season, taking a pass from classmate and fellow captain Michael Chamberlin past a pair of Webster defenders, where he fired it into the net from about 18-feet out.

The Bears’ second goal came off a corner kick, with Chamberlin picking up his second assist of the night. Sophomore midfielder Michael Flowers took the short corner and sent a cross over to Chamberlin for a header, with senior Patrick McLean cleaning up the play and putting the ball into the net.

Webster cut the WUSTL lead to one with a goal nearly midway through the second half, but the Bears were able to hold on for the 2-1 win.

Washington U. (1-0) returns on action on Saturday, Sept. 3, when it hosts Central College (Iowa) for its home opener at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo., at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live over the web at: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/wustl.portal
