Neumann, Held and Heymann Earn Academic All-District Honors

St. Louis, Mo., October 30, 2009 – Junior back Alex Neumann of the Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team and senior back Libby Held and senior midfielder Becca Heymann, of the No. 9 women’s soccer team earned ESPN the Magazine second-team Academic All-District VII honors, as announced Friday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Neumann has started in the backfield in all 16 games for the Bears and is one of the top defenders on a Washington University team that has allowed just 13 goals all season. He was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) first-team All-South region selection in 2008, and is a two-time Academic All-University Athletic Association (UAA) honoree. Neumann has a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.85 as an economics and entrepreneurship double major.

Held has started 14 games for the Bears from her center back position, leading a defense that has allowed just nine goals this season. An NSCAA first-team All-America honoree in 2008, she is a three-time All-UAA and two-time all-region selection. Held is also a three-time Academic All-UAA honoree and will graduate in May with a 3.66 GPA while majoring in biology.

Heymann, a second-team honoree as a junior, has scored four goals and added an assist while starting 13 games for the Bears in 2009. A two-time all-UAA and all-region selection, she ranks 10th in career goals (18) and 11th in points (48) at Washington U. Heymann is a three-time Academic all-UAA selection and has a 3.78 GPA wile majoring in philosophy-neuroscience-psychology.

The Washington University men’s and women’s soccer teams return to action on Friday, Oct. 30, when they take on UAA foe Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. The men’s game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (ET), with the women’s game to follow at 8 p.m.
