Zach Query's Pair of Goals Lead No. 8 Men's Soccer Past Illinois Wesleyan, 3-0

St. Louis, Mo., October 19, 2011 — Junior forward Zachary Query scored twice to lead the No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team to a 3-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan University on a cold and windy night at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.

The win was the sixth in a row for the Bears as they improve to 13-1 on the year while Illinois Wesleyan dropped to 7-6-1. Washington U. leads the all-time series with the Titans 10-0-2.

The Bears controlled play in the first half but Illinois Wesleyan still generated several strong scoring opportunities, with sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson turning away each attempt.

Washington University struck less than 10 minutes into the action when senior Pat McLean found classmate Peter Jebson with a low pass through the box. Jebson controlled the ball and hammered it off the post from five yards out, collecting the rebound as it bounced right back to him before burying it for the first goal of his career.

Illinois Wesleyan had three strong shots on goal over the final 10 minutes of the half but Jebson made three saves to preserve the shutout. Kyle Gorgol took the first shot on net for the Titans, firing a ball from 15-yards out towards the upper left corner of the goal with Jebson making a diving save to punch the ball over the cross bar.

With just under five minutes to play in the opening half Illinois Wesleyan had another close-range shot on net, with Jebson stopping Jared Casey. That save led to a fast break opportunity for the Bears resulting in their second goal just 31 seconds later.

Senior Dylan Roman set up Query for the score firing a crisp cross to Queary inside Illinois Wesleyan’s box that he quickly headed in for his sixth score of the season. The assist was Roman’s third of the year, while he increased his team-leading point total to 17.

The second half did not feature as many scoring chances but Query capitalized on open space in the middle of the field with a long shot for his second goal of the game.

Senior Cody Costakis delivered a short pass to Query in the middle of the field nearly 30 yards out. As Query collected the ball he had his back to the net but he settled down and spun around to fire a high shot past a diving Tim Hegwood into the goal. The score increased his season tally to seven, tying him for the team lead in goals and points (17) with Roman.

Washington U. (13-1) returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 23, for its final non-conference game of the season, a match-up with postseason seeding implications at No. 7 Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, at 11 a.m.

The game will be a rematch of last year’s second round NCAA matchup between the two teams that ended in a 1-1 tie with Loras advancing on penalty kicks. The Duhawks are 13-1-2 this season and have won their last three contests.
