WU Remains in First Place With Road Victory
Waltham, Mass., October 16, 2011 – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team remained in first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with a 2-0 win at Brandeis University on Sunday in Waltham, Mass.
Washington University improved its overall record to 12-1, and remains perfect in the UAA with a 4-0 mark. With three games remaining, the Bears are three points ahead of second place Case Western Reserve University (11-3, 3-1 UAA). The two teams will meet on Sunday, Oct. 30, in St. Louis, in a possible winner take all match-up for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Bears struck first just before halftime in the 39th minute, converting on a corner kick. Senior Michael Chamberlin finished the play off for the Bears, following assists from seniors Zach Hendrickson and Cody Costakis. The goal for Chamberlin was his first of the season and fourth of his career. Washington U. outshot Brandeis 7-6 in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Washington U. sealed the victory with an insurance goal at 83:41 on a give-and-go goal by senior Zachary Query. Senior Dylan Roman assisted on the goal to take over the team lead with 16 points. Brandeis outshot Washington U. 11-2 in the second half and 17-9 for the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson was stellar throughout the contest, making a career-high nine save in the win. Jebson is 12-1 this season in the nets with a 0.61 goals against average and five shutouts.
Washington University puts its five-game win streak on the line at home against Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live at: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/wustl.portal
