Roman's First Goal Leads Bears Past Case

BOXSCORE

Cleveland, Ohio, October 15, 2010 – Junior Dylan Roman’s first career goal came at a good time, as he found the back of the net two minutes into the first overtime as the No. 11 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team posted a crucial 1-0 conference victory at Case Western Reserve University on Friday night in Cleveland, Ohio.

Senior Cody Costakis sent a through ball to Roman, who chipped its past Case goalkeeper Ben Yabrow for the game-winner.

“It was more Cody than me. He played a nice ball and I just finished the play off,” said Roman. “It was a huge win for our team, and it kept our hopes alive for a UAA Championship.”

An evenly played first half saw the two teams combine for four shots, with Washington University outshooting Case, 3-1. Costakis took six corner kicks in the first half for Washington U., but the Bears did not have any scoring chances in the first 45 minutes of play.

The Bears controlled the second half of play and outshot Case, 12-1. Washington U. had its only scoring opportunity of the game at 86:48, after the Bears played a short corner. Costakis played the corner kick to sophomore Zach Query, who dribbled inside the 18 and fired a left-footed shot that Case goalkeeper Ben Yabrow deflected over the goal.

Washington U. outshot Case Western Reserve, 16-2, and had a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Andrew Serio (45 minutes) and freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson (46:55, one save) split time in goal to combine for the Bears’ 10th shutout.

Still unbeaten in 2010 with a 10-0-3 record, Washington University is off to its best start to a season since 1979, when the Red and Green began the year with a 12-0-2 mark en route to a 16-3-3 final record and a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship.
