Knepper's 19 Points Leads Washington U. Past Case Western Reserve, 80-71
Cleveland, Ohio, February 6, 2011 – Senior Caleb Knepper scored a season-high 19 points on five three-pointers as the Washington University in St. Louis men’s basketball posted an 80-71 victory at Case Western Reserve University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.
Junior Dylan Richter added 16 points and five rebounds, while senior Spencer Gay had 16 points and nine rebounds. Junior Alex Toth added nine second-half points for the Bears, who hit 10 three-pointers in the win.
Knepper and Richter combined to score the first 15 points of the game for the Bears. Knepper scored nine points on three triples, while Richter had the other six points on three lay-ups. Sophomore Austin Fowler was the lone offensive weapon for Case, scoring 12 of the team’s first 15 points, and his jumper with 11:57 remaining knotted the score at 15-15.
WUSTL held onto a three-point lead with less than four minutes remaining in the half, but a three-pointer from freshman Will Patt and a steal and a lay-up from Richter in a span of 12 seconds extended the lead to 31-23. The triple for Patt was the first of his collegiate career. The Bears took its largest lead to halftime at 37-25 following a three-pointer from sophomore Ben Hoener with 23 seconds left in the half.
Knepper led the Bears with 11 first-half points, while Richter added 10. The Bears shot 46.7 percent from the field and hit 6-of-12 from three-point range. Washington U. also forced 10 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Bears built a 46-33 lead following a lay-up from Toth with 16:58 to play, but Washington U. went ice cold from the field. Case answered with a 9-0 run behind five points from senior Reid Anderson as the Spartans trimmed the advantage to 46-42 before a timeout from Washington U. head coach Mark Edwards.
Tim Chung caught fire for Case, scoring 11-straight points in a span of 2:03, to regain the lead at 55-54 with 7:44 remaining. Back-to-back three’s from Richter and Knepper got Washington U. the lead back at 60-57 with less than six minutes to play.
Case Western Reserve (8-12, 4-5 UAA) got the lead down to three points on three other occasions, but Washington U. sealed the victory by hitting 8-of-9 free-throws in the final two minutes.
Austin Fowler (23 points), Anderson (15 points) and Chung (14 points) all scored in double figures for Case, who also hit 10 three-pointers. The Spartans connected on just 11-of-21 (52.4 percent) from the free-throw line in the loss.
Washington University (11-9, 5-4 UAA) wraps up its four-game road trip at Emory University on Friday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. (ET), and at the University of Rochester on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 11:30 p.m. (ET).
