Washington University Chosen as Favorite in UAA Football Preseason Coaches’ Poll
St. Louis, Mo., August 13, 2013 — Washington University in St. Louis was selected as the favorite in the 2013 University Athletic Association (UAA) Football Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announced Tuesday by the Association.
Washington University, who received two first-place votes, ended last season on a four-game winning streak to win its ninth Association football title. Case Western Reserve University received one first-place vote and was picked second, while Carnegie Mellon University received the final first-place vote and was third, and the University of Chicago as fourth.
Washington University returns 74 letterwinners and 20 starters from the 2012 squad, including five first-team all-UAA honorees on defense from a year ago.
Senior defensive back Tate Byers (56 tackles), senior linebacker Peter Lowery (68 tackles), senior defensive lineman Nelson Nwumeh (23 tackles, 3.5 sacks), junior linebacker Fade Oluokun (70 tackles) and senior defensive back Andrew Skalman (30 tackles, five interceptions) lead a defensive squad that returns 10 starters. Skalman is a second-team Preseason All-America honoree after leading the UAA and ranking second in Division III with 19 passes defended.
The Bears return seven starters on offense, highlighted by four on the offensive line – senior Jon Levin, junior Connor Meneough, junior Will Thompson and sophomore Matt Yurescko. Senior quarterback Eric Daginella also returns after throwing for 1,116 yards and six touchdowns in six starts a year ago.
Second-team all-UAA sophomore kicker Alex Hallwachs (7-12 FG, 5-6 XP) and senior long snappers Seth Wight and Byers return for the special teams unit.
Head coach Larry Kindbom enters his 25th season the Danforth Campus with an overall record of 148-92 (.617). The winningest coach in school history, Kindbom has guided the Bears to a winning record in 19 of 24 seasons.
Washington University opens the 2013 season at four-time NCAA Division III national champion and No. 9 preseason ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday, Sept. 7, at Noon in Whitewater, Wis.
