Kevin Sparks and Lucy Cheadle Lead Washington U. Cross Country Teams at Greater Louisville Classic
Louisville, Ky., Sept. 29, 2012 – The Washington University in St. Louis men’s cross country team finished 19th, while the women’s team was 28th overall in the gold division at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday morning.
The Washington U. men scored 541 points to finish 19th out of 31 teams in the gold division, which featured just nine non-NCAA Division I teams. NCAA DI Iona College won the men’s race with 47 points. In the women’s race, Washington U. finished 28th out of 31 teams with 765 points. The Bears were one of just three non-Division I teams in the race, which was won by University of Arizona with 71 points.
Junior Kevin Sparks was the top finisher for the Washington U. men, placing 30th out of 255 runners with a time of 24:29.70 on the 8K course. Senior David Hamm and sophomore Andrew Padgett finished 116th and 118th overall with times of 25:27.71 and 25:27.98, respectively. Sophomore Ryan Senci followed in 161st place with a time of 25:55.09, while sophomore Brett Baker rounded out the scoring for Washington U. by placing 171st in a time of 26:00.87.
In the women’s race, sophomore Lucy Cheadle clocked a time of 17:33.54 to finish 44th out of 267 runners in the 5K race. Freshman Ellen Toennies finished 196th in a time of 18:53.19. Sophomore Beatrice Gantzer (19:18.82) and junior Lizzy Handschy (19:22.58) placed 217th and 221st, while freshman Bri Tiffany (19:31.90) finished 231st.
The Washington U. cross country teams will have next week off before traveling to Oshkosh, Wis., to compete in the Oshkosh Brooks Invite.
