Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Take First Place at Maryville Invitational

St. Louis, Mo., September 18, 2010 – The top-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men’s cross country team and the No. 4 women’s team both submitted first place finishes with perfect team scores of 15 points at the Maryville University Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 18, in St. Louis, Mo.
Senior Erik Hinrichsen won the men’s race with a time of 28:19, while WUSTL junior Liz Phillips placed second in the women’s race, finishing in 20:30, just 10 seconds behind an unattached runner from Missouri Baptist, Meghan Hudson, who took first overall on the women’s side.
Senior Alden Black crossed the finish line less than a second after Hinrichsen, also posting a time of 28:19. Junior Michael Burnstein finished third with a mark of 28:48, freshman Dalton Guthrie placed fourth in 28:51, and junior Tucker Hartley rounded out the Washington University top five with a time of 28:52.
Placing third overall for the WUSTL women’s team was freshman Sarah Fisher, who finished just a second behind Phillips while senior Jessica Londeree posted a time of 20:43 to take fourth place overall. Running for the first time this season, senior All-American Taryn Surtees came in fifth with a time of 20:46 and junior Erica Jackey completed the Bears’ top five by coming in sixth in 21:25.
The Washington University men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 25, when they compete at the Southern Illinois University Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill., beginning at 10 a.m.
