Washington University Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Compete at SIUE Cross Country Challenge

Edwardsville, Ill., Sept. 14, 2012 – Sophomores Ryan Senci and Margaret Flatley led the Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s cross country teams at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cross Country Challenge on Friday evening.
The meet was scored using a dual meet format. The Washington U. men won three of their four matchups, falling to Southeast Missouri State University by just three points (27-30), but defeating Missouri Baptist University (15-50), SIUE (25-36), and Western Illinois University (26-33). The WUSTL women won two of three duals. Washington U. defeated Missouri Baptist (15-50) and Western Illinois (21-40), but lost by a narrow margin to SEMO (25-30). The SIUE women did not have five runners compete, so there was no dual score for Washington U.-SIUE on the women’s side.
Senci led two WUSTL men in the top-10 with a fifth-place individual finish after clocking a time of 25:46.15 on the 8K course. Sophomore Drew Padgett also finished in the top 10, placing seventh overall in 25:47.64. Junior Elliott Petterson (12th) and sophomores Brett Baker (13th) and Garrett Patrick (14th) rounded out the top five for Washington U. with times of 25:56.88, 25:58.28, and 25:58.35, respectively.
On the women’s side, Washington U. had four runners finish in the top-10 individually. Flatley, running her first race for the Bears, placed fifth overall with a 5K time of 18:52.82. Freshman Bri Tiffany followed in 18:59.62 to place sixth. Sophomore Beatrice Gantzer (19:16.44) and freshman Ellen Toennies (19:22.18) also finished in the top-10, placing ninth and 10th, respectively. Junior Elizabeth Worley finished in 14th overall in 19:46.09 to finish the scoring for WUSTL.
The Washington U. cross country teams have two weeks off before traveling to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the Greater Louisville Challenge. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. (ET).
