Washington University’s Lucy Cheadle and Kevin Sparks Named UAA Cross Country Athletes of the Week
St. Louis, Mo., November 19, 2012 – Washington University in St. Louis sophomore Lucy Cheadle and junior Kevin Sparks were selected as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Women’s and Men’s Cross Country Athletes of the Week, as announced Monday by the Association.
Cheadle was named the UAA Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the sixth time this season after running to her second-straight All-America honors. She finished 21st overall in the field of 277 runners at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind. Cheadle became the seventh runner in Washington University women’s cross country history to earn repeat All-America honors. She was also selected as the UAA Athlete of the Week Sept. 4, Oct. 1, 15 and 29, and Nov. 12.
Sparks received UAA Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors for the fourth time in 2012. He posted the highest individual finish in Washington U. men’s cross country history at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Sparks placed fourth in the field of 280 runners and led the Washington U. men to a fifth-place finish in the team standings, which was the second-highest finish in school history. He is just the fourth men’s runner in school history to earn All-America cross country honors. Sparks was previously named the UAA Athlete of the Week Oct. 1 and 29, and Nov. 12.
