Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Has 10 Named All-Midwest Region

St. Louis, Mo., November 15, 2011 — St. Louis, Mo., November 15, 2011 – The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s cross country teams combined to have 10 student-athletes earn U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Midwest Region honors for cross country in Division III following this weekend’s NCAA Regional Championships.
Washington University’s women’s squad tied for the most in Division III with seven representatives, while the men’s team had three all-region honorees. Athletes of member schools that finished in the top 35 individually at one of the nine regional sites earned the honor.
Seniors Erica Jackey and Elizabeth Phillips both completed the 6K course in 21:53.8, to finish second and third overall. Freshman Lucy Cheadle was 1.6 seconds behind Jackey and Phillips to place fifth. Sophomore Sarah Fisher and senior Molly Wawrzyniak also finished in the top 10 for WUSTL, placing sixth and ninth in times of 22:00.4 and 22:08.8, respectively. Also for Washington U., senior Jessica Londeree finished 14th in 22:31.6 and freshman Grace Bridwell was 19th in 22:41.5.
Senior Michael Burnstein led Washington University with a second-place finish among the 277 runners in the men’s race. He clocked a time of 24:54.9 on the 8K course. Junior David Hamm crossed the line in 25:15.4 to finish 10th, while senior Tucker Hartley finished 19th with a time of 25:28.9.
In addition, 11th-year head coach Jeff Stiles picked up Women’s Midwest Region Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bears to the regional championship. Washington U. won the Midwest Region with just 24 points, winning by 91 points over second-place University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The squad finished all seven runners in the overall top 20. Stiles also led the Bears to their third-straight University Athletic Association (UAA) title this fall.
The Washington University men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Oshkosh, Wis., to finish their seasons at the 2011 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships being held at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis.
