Washington U. Races in Competitive Greater Louisville Classic
Louisville, Ky., October 3, 2009 – The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday morning. The WU women’s squad finished seventh out of the 35 teams while the men’s squad finished 17th out of 38 teams. The majority of teams in both races were NCAA Division I squads.
For the Washington University women’s squad, junior Taryn Surtees led the way with a 21st place finish in a time of 18:04.28 in the 5k run. Senior Molly Schlamb finished just ten seconds behind Surtees with a time of 18:14.82.
Juniors Jess Londeree and Sangeeta Hardy both cracked the 19 minute mark finishing at 18:44.48 and 18:55.91 respectively, good for 67th and 83rd overall. Underclassmen Erica Jackey and Molly Wawrzyniak, both sophomores, and Bronwyn Bedrick, a freshman, rounded out the scoring for the Bears women’s team.
Junior Michael Burnstein paced the Bears’ men’s team with a time of 25:06.99 which was good for a 45th place finish. Freshman b finished second for the team with a time of 25:47.62, which put him at 103rd overall. Junior Erik Hinrichsen scored points for the Bears with time of 26:00.48, while sophomore Malik Nabulsi was just a second behind Hinirichsen at 26:01.00.
Junior Kwin Keuter scored for the team with a time of 26:08.35. Rounding out the finishers for the Red and Green were junior Zach Bahor and senior Alden Black with times of 26:17.16 and 26:20.08 respectively.
NCAA Division I institution University of Louisville took first in the men’s meet and Purdue University took the win in the women’s event. The WU men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to action on Saturday, October. 10, when they race in the Cross Country Challenge. The meet, in Terre Haute, Ind., is scheduled to begin at noon (ET).
