Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Place Fourth at SIUE Open

Edwardsville, Ill., October 22, 2010 – The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s cross country teams each ran to a fourth-place finish at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Open on Friday afternoon at the SIUE cross country course in Edwardsville Ill.
Friday afternoon’s race served as a final warm-up for the Bears before next weekends University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, to be held Saturday, Oct. 30, at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, N.Y.
The Washington University women’s cross country team will aim to defend the conference title while the men’s team will look to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish at the UAA Championship and attempt to capture its first conference championship since 2003.
Freshman Tarek Elhage led the WUSTL men at the SIUE Open, finishing in 10th-place overall with a time of 27:08.10. Saint Joseph’s College finished first in the men’s race with a team score of 44 points.
For the Washington University women’s team, freshman Gabrielle Reuveni came in 12th-place overall to pace the Bears, finishing the 6K course with a time of 23:59.19. Pittsburg State University won the women’s race with a tally of 25 points, placing four runners in the top-10.
Freshman Justin Rodriguez finished 12th overall for the WUSTL men, submitting a time of 27:09.30. Junior Nicholas Carroll placed 16th with a time of 27:17.00, freshman Jason Dorn grabbed 25th place in 27:59.00 and freshman Paul Johnson finished just 4.2 seconds behind Dorn to come in 26th overall.
Crossing the finish line second for the women’s team was freshman Lizzy Handschy, who placed 18th with a time of 24:28.46. Freshman Elizabeth Worley came in 20th with a time of 24:34.54, senior Augusta Dunse was 23rd with a mark of 24:50.99, and sophomore Remy Zagorski rounded out the Bears’ top-five with a time of 25:00.61, which was good for 25th place.
