Junior Matt Bayer Named First-Team Academic All-District VII
St. Louis, Mo., May 10, 2010 – Junior designated hitter Matt Bayer of the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team earned first-team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VII honors, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Bayer, who is an academic all-district honoree for the first time in his career, is now eligible for Academic All-America honors as a first-team all-district selection.
A mathematics and economics major with a 3.81 cumulative grade point average through the fall 2009 semester, Bayer started all 32 games at designated hitter for Washington University this season. He finished the year ranked third on the team in batting (.346), fourth in RBIs (26) tied for the team lead in doubles (nine) and hit two home runs.
Bayer had six games this season where he tallied at least two RBIs, including a 2-for-4 performance against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on March 27, where he also hit two doubles, and a 3-for-3 day against Greenville College on April 10, when he had a home run, two RBIs and scored three times.
The Washington University baseball team finished the 2010 season with a 17-15 overall record, securing the program’s 12th-consecutive winning season.
