Washington University Baseball Lands Three on Academic All-District First Team
St. Louis, Mo., May 2, 2013 – Three Washington University in St. Louis sophomores were among the 13 student-athletes named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Five Division III Baseball First Team, as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Sophomore designated hitter Brian Cizek, third baseman Chris Lowery and pitcher Dom Quaranta each received the honor.
Cizek, a geophysics major and political science minor, holds a 3.77 GPA. He played in 18 games, including eight starts this season, before being sidelined by an injury. Cizek ranks fourth on the team with a .344 batting average (11-for-32). He has a double, four RBIs, and seven runs scored. Cizek also had a six-game hitting streak prior to being walked in his only at-bat April 27 at Chicago.
Lowery, who holds a 3.70 GPA with a major in mechanical engineering and a minor in finance, is the top offensive player for Washington U. this season while starting all 36 games he has played. He leads the University Athletic Association (UAA) and is tied for second in NCAA Division III with eight sacrifice flies this season. Lowery also ranks in the top five of the UAA in seven other offensive categories – second in triples (3), third in hits (54), fourth in RBIs (32) and slugging percentage (.533), and fifth in batting average (.394), doubles (10) and total bases (73). He has reached base in 32 games, including recording hits in 29 of those games. Lowery has recorded 19 multiple-hit games and nine multiple-RBI games in 2013.
Quaranta, a mechanical engineering major with a 3.95 GPA, was one of three pitchers named to the Academic All-District First Team. He has posted a 6-0 record in seven starts for the Bears this season. Quaranta, who has limited opponents to a .258 batting average, is tied for first in the UAA for wins (six) and best record (6-0). He also ranks fifth in the conference in ERA (2.50) and number of batters struck out looking (17). Quaranta is second on the team with 41 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings, including a career-high seven strikeouts in back-to-back appearances against NCAA Division I Saint Louis University and Greenville College April 16 and 20, respectively. He was selected to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week and named the UAA Pitcher of the Week after throwing a two-hit complete-game shutout at University of Chicago April 27.
In order to be selected to an Academic All-District team, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing. As First-Team Academic All-District Team selections, Cizek, Lowery and Quaranta will be among the nominees for the Academic All-America Team, which will be announced Wednesday, May 29.
