Washington University Baseball Receives Bid to NCAA Division III Championship

St. Louis, Mo., May 14, 2012 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team was one of 56 teams selected to compete in the 2012 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship, and will travel to Millington, Tenn., to compete in regional play Wednesday-Sunday, May 16-20.
Washington U., who finished the regular season with a 28-12 record and are No. 1 in the Central Region rankings, received one of two Pool B bids to the NCAA Tournament. The Bears are the No. 2 seed in the six-team regional. Seventh-ranked Birmingham-Southern College (35-7) is the No. 1 seed in the regional, while No. 22 DePauw University (33-12), Emory University (26-12), Webster University (31-11) and Illinois Wesleyan University (29-15) will be the third through sixth seeds, respectively.
As the No. 2 seed, Washington U. will face Webster University in the first round at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bears and Gorloks split a pair of regular-season games. Washington U. won 12-7 on March 21 and Webster defeated the Bears 12-9 on April 17. The other first-round games will feature Birmingham-Southern against Illinois Wesleyan at Noon and DePauw against Emory at 7 p.m.
Washington U. also faced DePauw, Emory and Illinois Wesleyan during the regular season. The Bears lost their first three games of the season to DePauw before earning a win over the Tigers on April 26. Washington U. defeated Emory 10-1, before falling to the Eagles 2-0 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) championship in Sanford, Fla., on March 14 and 16. Illinois Wesleyan held on for a 2-1 win over the Bears on April 24.
The Bears will be making their eighth NCAA Tournament appearance all-time and first since 2009. Washington U. has an all-time record of 3-14 in the tournament, and will be looking for its first win since 2005.
