Bears Suffer 1-0 Double Overtime Loss to No. 23 Loras

St. Louis, Mo., September 19, 2010 – The No. 13 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 double overtime loss to No. 23 ranked Loras College on Sunday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo. The 1-0 loss for the Bears is their third of the season.
Kate Young took advantage of a mistake by Washington University goalkeeper Clara Jaques to sneak the game-winning goal into the back of the net in the 106th minute. Jaques came out of the box to stop Young, but she snuck a shot underneath the legs of Jaques for the game-winner. The goal for Young was her team-leading fourth of the season.
Washington University outshot Loras, 20-18, for the game, but the Duhawks had a 6-0 shot advantage in the extra periods. Washington U. also had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Jaques had three saves in the loss for the Bears, while Katie Chambers made 10 saves en route to her seventh win of the season.
The Bears had plenty of good opportunities to score in the loss, recording 11 shots on goal. Freshman Kate Doyle’s header in the 16th minute was saved by Kelsey Campbell to keep the score at 0-0 early in the first half.
Washington U. outshot Loras, 11-4, in the second half, and had two prime scoring opportunities Junior Mari Greenberg’s shot to the open net was wide left in the 59th minute, while sophomore Emily Gosche’s shot in the 83rd minute off a cross from Doyle was wide right.
Washington University (3-3) begins a crucial stretch of the season with road games at No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m., and at No. 25 Wheaton College on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m.
