Jaques Scores Game-Winner And Records Shutout Against Alma
St. Louis, Mo., September 11, 2010 – Sophomore goalkeeper Clara Jaques scored the game-winning goal on a free kick from midfield and also made four saves as the No. 3 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team defeated Alma College, 1-0, on Saturday in the Washington University Classic in St. Louis, Mo.
Jaques, who recorded her third-consecutive home shutout, took the free kick from 50 yards out in the 81st minute after a foul was called on Alma. The ball landed in the box and then bounced over Alma goalkeeper Monica Witt for the lone goal of the game. Washington U. outshot Alma, 26-6, and had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"I have never scored from the goalie position, and really did not know hot to react," Jaques said following the game. "All I was trying to do is make it difficult for the goalie. I was shocked when it actually went in."
