Ryan Bednar and Anna Zambricki Earn UAA Athlete of the Week Honors
St. Louis, Mo., September 16, 2013 – Washington University in St. Louis junior defensive back Ryan Bednar of the football team and junior midfielder Anna Zambricki of the No. 3 ranked women’s soccer team earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week, as announced Monday by the Association.
Bednar tied a school record with three interceptions in the Bears' 10-7 double-overtime win Saturday at home against Rhodes College. He had a pair of interceptions in the second quarter, and then intercepted Rhodes QB Blake Box late in the fourth quarter at the WUSTL six-yard line to send the game to overtime. Bednar also added three solo tackles and a pass break-up in the win. He earns UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week honors for the second time in his career.
Zambricki scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the No. 3 ranked Bears remained undefeated with a 5-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University Thursday in St. Louis. She scored two goals in a span of nine minutes in the first half to give Washington U. the 2-0 advantage. The game-winning goal for Zambricki was the 11th of her career, tying current assistant coach Caitlin Malone for fifth in school history with 11. She earns UAA Athlete of the Week honors for the third time in her career.
