Claire Voris and Max Woods Named UAA Athlete of the Week

St. Louis, Mo., April 25, 2011 – – Washington University in St. Louis had two student-athletes earn University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors, as announced Monday by the Association.

Senior pitcher Claire Voris of the No. 22 ranked softball team earned the accolade for the third straight week and fourth time this season, while senior Max Woods of the No. 6 ranked men’s tennis team picked up the honor for the first time this year.

Voris struck out a season-high 14 batters in Washington U.’s 1-0 victory in game one at Monmouth College on Saturday in Monmouth, lll. She improved to 13-3 this season with the win, allowing four singles. Voris struck out the side in the second and fourth innings, picking up the 69th complete game of her career, one shy of the school record.

Voris’ 14 strikeouts moved her past Jenna Harvey (Wellesley, 2005-08, 773) into 23rd place all-time in NCAA Division III history with 775. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in the game-winning run with an RBI ground out in the top of the sixth inning. This is Voris’ 14th UAA Athlete of the Week accolade of her career.

Woods picked up a pair of victories in Washington University’s 8-1 win over regional-foe Grinnell College on Saturday at the Steel Shop Tennis Club in St. Charles, Mo. Woods and fellow senior Isaac Stein got things going for the Bears with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, as Washington U. built a commanding 3-0 lead. He had the biggest win of the day for the Bears in singles, upsetting No. 21 ranked Juan Carlos Perez at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

Woods improved his all-time record to 164-66 (.713) with two victories on Saturday, moving just four wins shy of fourth place on the all-time list. This is Woods’ third UAA Athlete of the Week accolade of his career.
