Washington University Has Five Student Athletes Named UAA Athlete of the Week
St. Louis, Mo., October 18, 2011 – Washington University in St. Louis had five student-athletes earn University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors, as announced Tuesday by the Association.
Seniors Michael Burnstein and Erica Jackey and of men’s and women’s cross country team and junior Chris Castelluccio, senior Chris LaBarge and sophomore Nelson Nwumeh of the football team each earned the honor.
Jackey led third-ranked Washington U. to a first-place finish at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational on Saturday. She finished first in of a field of 395 competitors posting a time of 21:38.13 on the 6,000-meter course. The Bears compiled a team score of 61 points to claim the team title.
Burnstein paced fifth-ranked Washington U. to a second-place finish at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational. He finished second overall out of 434 runners posting a 24:59.06 finish on the 8,000-meter course. The Bears tallied a team score of 137 points, finishing behind top-ranked North Central College.
Castelluccio ran for a career-high 103 yards on 26 carries in the Bears’ 24-20 victory over the College of Wooster on Saturday. He leads the team and is fourth in the Association with 325 rushing yards.
Nwumeh recorded four solo tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack, and blocked an extra point in the win over Wooster. He blocked an extra point in the fourth quarter to preserve the four-point lead. He leads the conference in tackles for loss with 10 and is second in sacks with four.
LaBarge recovered a fumble on a kickoff and returned it for an 11-yard touchdown in the first quarter to help the Bears to the victory over Wooster. He also made two tackles – one on special teams and one on defense.
