Washington University Athletics Hosts Sixth Annual Big SAAC Night
St. Louis, Mo., December 15, 2010 – The Washington University in St. Louis Department of Athletics hosted its Sixth Annual Big Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Night on Monday, Dec. 13, in the Athletic Complex. Approximately 375 student-athletes attended the event, one of the largest groups in its six-year history.
“The student-athletes had a great time,” said junior women’s basketball player Amanda Meppelink, who serves as chair of Big SAAC Night and a SAAC Executive Board Member. “The balloon pop game is always a favorite, and everyone seemed to like the new additions to the relay race.”
All 19-varsity teams and the varsity cheerleading squad met in the WU Field House at 9 p.m., followed by a 30-minute game of “Captain of the Boat,” led by Director of Athletics John Schael. The teams were then paired with a sister/brother team, and went into three game rotations for the next hour: dodge ball, balloon pop and relay races.
The Annual Big SAAC Night traditionally takes place on the Monday of reading week prior to final exams, as a way to let the student-athletes unwind and take a break from studying.
“I think it is important to mingle with other athletes and get to know others who understand what it means to be a student-athlete at Washington University,” Meppelink added. “Our schedules are usually pretty crazy, so Big SAAC Night provides one way for athletes to get to know each other and still have a lot of fun.”
