Washington University Has Four-Student Athletes Named UAA Athlete of the Week

St. Louis, Mo., April 5, 2011 – Seniors Ben Ingell and David Liebman of the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team, senior Ben Harmon of the men’s outdoor track and field team and freshman Theresa Petraskova of the No. 17 women’s tennis team were each named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the conference office.

Ingell and Liebman helped the baseball team post a 6-0 record last week, with five of those wins coming on the road. Ingell led the team offensively, hitting .462 while slugging .846 with three home runs, 10 RBIs and eight runs scored in addition to going 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts. In the double header sweep over Knox College on April 3, he was 8-for-10 at the plate with three home runs, including a grand slam in a 25-5 win, with 10 RBIs.

Liebman started two games on the mound, picking up a win with a 3.38 earned run average and 15 strikeouts in eight innings of work. In his victory over Knox College on Sunday, He allowed just two runs on three hits over five innings with 10 strikeouts, improving his overall record to 2-1.

Harmon set an automatic qualifying mark in the decathlon at the Washington University Invitational, held Friday-Saturday, April 1-2. He finished third in the competitive field with an NCAA Division III 2011 Outdoor Championship score of 6,763, ensuring participation in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the fourth time in his career.

Harmon leapt an NCAA provisional distance of 7.13 meters in the long jump, cleared 1.94 meters in the high jump and ran a time of 4:45.40 in the 1,500-meter.

Petraskova posted a 5-1 overall record in singles and doubles to help the women’s tennis team go 2-1 during a weekend road trip to San Antonio, Texas. The Bears fell to No. 30 Trinity University, 5-4, on April 1, but bounced back to pick up a 7-2 win over No. 26 University of Texas-Tyler and an 8-1 win against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor over the weekend.

Petraskova and senior Elise Sambol were 2-1 playing at second doubles. She was 3-0 playing at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, picking up wins against Trinity’s Katie Griffith, 6-3, 6-1, and UT-Tyler’s Lauren Giovannini 6-1, 7-5.
