Washington University Has Three-Student Athletes Named UAA Athlete of the Week
St. Louis, Mo., March 22, 2011 – Senior Kathryn Berger of the national runner-up Washington University in St. Louis women’s basketball team, junior Brandon Rogalski of the baseball team and senior Claire Voris of the softball team were each named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Berger helped lead the women’s basketball team to a second place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division III Final Four last weekend at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill. She poured in 28 points in an 87-77 victory over No. 7 Illinois Wesleyan University in the national semifinals on Friday night, then recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds in a 64-55 loss to Amherst College in the national championship game on Saturday.
Berger averaged 19.5 points and eight rebounds per game at the Final Four and was named to the 2011 NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team. She finishes her career ranked seventh in school history in scoring (1,143) and sixth in rebounding (717).
Rogalski led the baseball team to a 4-2 record last week, hitting .458 in six starts with a .958 slugging percentage. He picked up seven extra-base hits on the week with a home run, three triples and three doubles, knocking in six RBIs and scoring nine times. He was 3-for-4 with two triples, a double and three RBI’s in a 10-0 win over Dominican University on March 17.
Voris posted a 3-0 record and struck out 36 batters in 20 innings pitched last week. She began the week by striking out nine in a 16-2 win over Oswego State on Tuesday in Clermont, Fla. Voris followed that up with a season-high 14 strikeouts in a 1-0 win over Fontbonne University on Saturday and 13 strikeouts in a 5-4 victory over No. 19 Coe College on Sunday.
