Washington University Has Three Student-Athletes Earn UAA AOW Honors
St. Louis, Mo., February 28, 2011 – Freshman Evelyn Qin of the No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis women’s tennis team, sophomore Max Gordon of the baseball team and Naveen Chadalavada of the No. 6 men’s tennis team each earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors, as announced Monday by the conference office.
Qin picked up a pair of wins as the Bears swept NCAA Division II University of Southern Indiana, 9-0, on Saturday, Feb. 26 in St. Charles, Mo. She teamed with freshman Betsey Edershile to earn an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles and then was a straight-set 6-2, 6-1, winner in the No. 2 singles match.
Gordon pitched 4.2 effective innings in a relief effort in Washington University’s 5-4 season-opening loss to NCAA Division I Saint Louis University on Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, Mo. He took over for the Bears to start the fifth inning and went a stretch where he retired 13-straight batters. Gordon gave up just one hit and struck out six.
Chadalavada captured the No. 3 singles flight and teamed with fellow freshman Max Franklin to win the No. 1 doubles flight to highlight the Bears’ performance at the Principia College Invitational II on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 25-26, in Elsah, Ill.
Chadalavada, who has a 12-4 overall record (7-2-singles; 5-2-doubles) in his rookie season, won his final two singles matches in straight sets after a hard-fought victory over Tim Bryant of the University of Missouri-St. Louis (6-4, 5-7, 10-5) in the opening match. Chadalavada and Franklin won its first two doubles matches by a 9-8 margin, before completing the sweep with a 8-3 win over Principia’s Scott Ross and Chris Hagenlocher in the final match on Saturday.
