Washington University’s Melissa Gilkey and Jasmine Williams Earn UAA Athlete of the Week Honors
St. Louis, Mo., February 13, 2012 – Washington University in St. Louis had a pair of student-athletes receive University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors, as announced by the Association.
Freshman Melissa Gilkey was named the Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week, while sophomore Jasmine Williams was selected as the Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week.
Gilkey earned her first UAA Athlete of the Week honors of her career after averaging 16 points and 10.5 rebounds in two Washington U. wins over the weekend. She recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in the Bears’ 59-50 win over Case Western Reserve University on Friday. Gilkey followed that with 20 points, one shy of her career high, and seven rebounds in Washington U.’s 86-74 win over Carnegie Mellon on Sunday. She shot 65 percent (13-of-20) from the field and 75 percent (6-of-8) from the free-throw line in the two games, and also added four blocked shots.
Williams picked up Athlete of the Week accolades for the third time this season following a big day at the Monmouth College Fighting Scot Invitational on Saturday. She cleared a career-best height of 1.68 meters to win the women’s high jump at the meet. The mark moved Williams into second all-time at Washington U. and a tie for sixth on the NCAA Division III performance list this season. She also added a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.15 meters at Monmouth.
