Burnstein, Byrne and Pham Earn UAA Athlete of the Week Honors
St. Louis, Mo., October 5, 2010 – Junior Michael Burnstein of the No. 2 men’s cross country team, freshman Meghan Byrne of the No. 1 volleyball team and freshman Chi Pham of the women’s swimming and diving team each earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors.
Burnstein paced the men’s cross country team to a 16th-place finish at the competitive Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 2, in Louisville, Ky., running against a field that consisted of some of the top programs across all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA. He finished the 8K course at Tom Sawyer State Park with a time of 24:58.68, which was good for 57th overall in a field of 323 runners.
Byrne helped the volleyball team secure a 3-0 record at the first UAA round robin of the season, boasting a team-high attack percentage of .382 over the weekend to go along with 35 kills. She eclipsed double-digit kills in all three of the Bears’ matches, notching 13 kills while hitting .407 in a 3-2 win over No. 19 University of Chicago. Washington U. also defeated Brandeis University, 3-0, and the University of Rochester, 3-1.
Pham recorded five top-seven finishes to lead the Washington University women’s swimming and diving team to a fourth-place finish at the University of Missouri Show-Me Showdown on Oct. 2, in Columbia, Mo. She finished fourth in the 100-backstroke (59.26) and fifth in the 200-individual medley (2:12.62). Pham was also a member of the Bears’ sixth-place 200-medley relay (1:53.12), sixth-place 400-freestyle relay (3:42.25) and seventh-place 200-freestyle relay (1:41.22) teams.
