WUSTL Lands Four UAA Athlete of the Week Honorees
St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 28, 2013 – Four student-athletes from Washington University in St. Louis were selected as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for their respective sports, as announced Monday by the Association.
Senior Jack Fischer and freshman Drew Gottwald of the men’s soccer team, and junior Fade Oluokun and sophomore Alec Stanke of the football team each received the honor.
Fischer was named the UAA Men’s Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career. He helped anchor the Bears’ defense that did not allow a shot on goal and posted its fifth shutout win of the season at Principia College Thursday. Fischer also recorded one shot on goal in the win. In the past two seasons, he has started all 31 matches and has helped the Bears record 15 shutouts.
Gottwald earned UAA Men’s Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week honors for the first time in his career. He scored a pair of goals to help Washington U. earned a 3-0 win at Principia Thursday. Gottwald increased his season total to three goals scored on just three shots on goal. His three goals are tied for second on the team.
Oluokun received the UAA Football Defensive Athlete of the Week award for the second time this season and third time in his career. He led the defensive unit with nine tackles, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble in the Bears’ 7-0 win at Macalester College Saturday. Oluokun and the Washington U. defense forced eight punts and three turnovers in the win, while limiting Macalester to 238 yards of total offense. It marked the first shutout for Washington U. since Oct. 3, 2009.
Stanke was selected as the UAA Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week for the fifth time this season. He averaged 33.5 yards on six punts in Washington U.’s 7-0 win at Macalester Saturday. Stanke had a long punt of 44 yards in the first quarter. He and the punt team allowed just three return yards on his six punts in the win.
