Three Washington U. Student-Athletes Earn UAA Weekly Honors
St. Louis, Mo., October 22, 2012 – Three student-athletes from Washington University in St. Louis were selected as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for their respective sports, as announced Monday by the Association.
Junior quarterback Eric Daginella of the football team, senior goalkeeper Clara Jaques of the No. 5-ranked women’s soccer team, and junior forward Jeremy Kirkwood of the men’s soccer team each received Athlete of the Week accolades.
Daginella was named the UAA Football Offensive Athlete of the Week after leading Washington University to an 18-13 win at Denison University Saturday. He threw for a career-high 197 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Daginella connected with Mitch McMahon for a seven-yard touchdown pass play in the second quarter, and then completed a 19-yard touchdown to Ryan Lubatkin on a bubble screen midway through the third quarter. In three career starts, he is 32-of-59 for 371 yards and three touchdowns.
Jaques received UAA Women’s Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week honors. She made two saves and picked up the shutout in goal as Washington U. ran its home unbeaten streak to 16 matches with a 2-0 win over Principia College on Oct. 16. The shutout for Jaques was the 24th of her career, breaking the school record of 23.5 set by Stephanie Peters (1998-2001).
Kirkwood picked up UAA Men’s Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week honors for the Bears. He scored one goal and assisted on another in Washington U.’s 3-0 non-conference win over Principia College on Oct. 18. Kirkwood scored the game-winner for the Bears just 90 seconds into the match. His game-winning goal was his third goal, and second game-winner in four matches this season.
